Should you degrease a bike chain?
As long as your chain isn’t terribly dirty to begin with, washing it on the bike can yield excellent results. Requiring both degreaser and water, this is best done outdoors. Tools required: Citrus-based or similar degreaser.
What can I use as a bike degreaser?
A good recipe for a cheap, simple homemade degreaser is water + borax + washing (laundry) powder, mixed in the ratio 12:4:1. Keep it in a jar as spray bottles can get clogged (but might be worth a try for ease of application). It works on my bike.
How do you make homemade bike cleaner?
Dish soap works great! Take an old sponge or rag, wipe down the chain with dish soap that is mixed with only a little water. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then come back with a bucket of soap and water and wash the whole bike.
Can you wash a bike with washing up liquid?
Mix in your preferred bike wash to get some suds. Cheap car shampoo or washing-up liquid works fine. Some contain salt but it’s a tiny amount when mixed with a couple of gallons of water. You won’t turn your bike into rust.
Can I use fairy liquid to wash my motorbike?
No problem using washing up liquid on bikes. Doesn’t cause corrosion or any other problems, and i’ve been using it for a very long time. Think car shampoo has wax in it so it won’t help with braking.
Can I use white spirit to clean a bike chain?
White spirit should work well for most chain lubes, paraffin is the other old favourite, both reasonably inexpensive and very effective. You put it on the chain like you would put on oil, ride the bike around for a couple of minutes, wipe the thick off with a cloth, then rinse with water.
Can you clean a bike chain with petrol?
I use kerosene or petrol to first clean the chain thoroughly. You can use an old toothbrush to clean it, once done, just spray some more petrol or kerosene to clean off the deposits. Then use an old cloth to wipe the deposits (if any).
